Maybe the best thing I’ll do all day: return cardinal chick to its nest. The chick must have walked out through the bamboo foliage to our patio edge. When it fell down, its parents immediately became agitated, peeping all around me. I didn’t realize what was going on until I saw the female adult cardinal being unusually bold, sitting atop the fence. I snapped a photo of the fledging on the bricks before it managed to hop and flutter over the fence to the next yard, where it prompting was trapped by six foot sheer walls. Its parents flew back and forth around it, trying to convince it to flutter out, but all to no avail. So…I intervened. I let the chick out through an open gate door, cornered it and captured it with a kitchen towel, and carried it back over to the bamboo stand. Standing on a chair, I was just barely able to reach the edge of the best. When I opened the towel, the fledging obliging took a small hop and then clenched a branch. And now, 5 minutes later, all is quiet again. The survival prospects of that chick were dire without me pulling this off. I hope it survives, thrives and lives long enough to hatch an exasperating chick of its own.

I found the mosquito factory. 25’ away from our patio, tucked away by the base of a fire escape. That likely accounts for much of the clouds of ankle-biting skeeters we’ve endured the part few summers. Time to drain this water hazard.

Haven’t been using Path much. Experiencing a form of social media fatigue and in the habit of using Instagram, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, blogs and Facebook in more public ways.

That’s a shame, given that I have a tighter network of friends here, on some level. A lot has happened since I last checked in here. Went to NYC and left O’Reilly Media. Much is on the way: parenthood is at most a month away.

I took my first run, jog and then walk tonight, out in the warm afternoon air. It hurt but felt good, as such things always seem to these days. My legs and back are growing older. I hope I’m gaining wisdom from the roads I’ve traveled to balance the aches at journeys’ end. – View on Path.

Powerful exercise of First Amendment rights outside of the White House earlier today, protesting the contained operation of the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. One of the protestors, Diane Wilson, later chained her neck to the fence. The local fire department was able to cut her free without harm.
